Study Abroad

Mysore, India

Emory students have the opportunity to spend the Fall semester studying abroad in South India. The largest democracy in the world, India offers opportunities to experience one of the oldest surviving civilizations and to study within a highly regarded educational system. With its global leadership in information technology, biological technology, medical services, and non-governmental organization (NGO) culture, India is also the ideal place for gaining valuable experience through internship opportunities.

Mysore and Bangalore

Tradition and cutting-edge technology co-exist as equally powerful forces in Mysore and Bangalore. The former capital of the princely state of Mysore, the city of Mysore has beautiful palaces, gardens, and premier educational institutions. Bangalore, the IT capital of the country, is known for its vibrant city life as well as beautiful temples and cultural opportunities. Both cities enjoy year-round temperatures between 68-80 degrees.

Academic Details

Students enroll in 5-6 courses, earning a minimum of 15 credits with a maximum of 16 to 19 possible credits. Each core course is 3 credits each, and the music and yoga courses are 1 credit each. Students earn credit in Asian Studies (as listed below), as well as possible credit in the academic major for independent research pending approval of the academic department. A total of 16 credits may be taken abroad to count towards the Asian Studies major.

Students are required to take the following four courses:

Language [AS 375]
Hindi, Sanskrit, or a pre-approved South Asian language. This program offers instruction in Hindi and Sanskrit. Please contact the DUS of Asian Studies in early Spring for information on other languages.

Civilization and Culture of India [AS 200]
Meets the distribution requirement for area V.c

Globalization of Traditional Arts in Rural India
[AS 370]
2 week, mid-semester traveling seminar to north India

Independent Research or Internship
[AS 397R]
One-month long project which must be approved by Emory’s Asian Studies faculty

Students are required to choose at least one of the following courses:
Women and Gender in Indian Society
[AS 370, SOC 389, or WS 385]
Science, Technology, and Development [AS 370]
Indian Cinema [AS 370].

Students may also elect to take one-credit courses in Yoga and/or Music.

Internships

Internship opportunities are available with
NGOs, public health organizations, and companies such as Infosys in and around Mysore and Bangalore.

Living Arrangements

Students live in the beautiful residential facilities of the Dhvanyaloka Centre for Indian Studies. A Main Office oversees the administration, maintenance, and security of the facility. Several single and a few double rooms are available. Breakfast and lunch are provided Monday through Thursday while classes are in session. During the independent research project/internship portion of the program, students may also have the opportunity to live with an Indian host family.
