  More than 120 Kamaiyas from western Nepal have been staging a sit-in at Bhadrakali since last Thursday. On Monday, they will enter the second stage of their sit-in by blocking the road to Singha Darbar. Martin Chautari now provides a chance for Nepalmaa basne Nepaliharu to hear about the arguments he presented in the US and responses to them, and to discuss the question of the importance/non-importance of emigrees returning.

  For the last two months the Kamaiya Mukti Andolan being waged in five districts of mid western and far western Nepal has been getting national attention. The struggle now gaining attention got started after 19 Kamaiya families of Geta VDC in Kailali district who were residing in the house of former minister Shiva Raj Panta filed petitions at the Geta VDC and Kailali CDO offices. Up to now, over 1000 such petitions have already been filed in the districts of Kanchanpur, Kailali, Bardiya, Banke and Dang.
  

  Ten Kamiyas who have registered petitions against their jamindars wish to share their sorrow/stories with journalists, intellectuals, and well-wishers in Kathmandu. Martin Chautari will facilitate this meeting to which you are cordially invited.

  The Kamaiyas are filing petitions against their Maliks in District Administration Office and VDC offices. As of now, the number of Kamaiyas filing the petitions has reached 1000. The movement is now spread over Kailali, Kanchanpur, Banke, Bardiya and Dang districts of western Nepal.
  

  Recently a group from Kathmandu visited two of the districts where the movement is intensive. Martin Chautari is organising a discussion program on Kamaiya Mukti Andolan where those who have returned from the field visit will share their observations about the movement.

  What is meditation? Why is it done and how is it practiced? What are its benefits to the individual? And can it extend benefit not just to the practicioner but to the whole society as well?

  Foreigners spend lakhs of rupees to seek Shamatha, Vipassana and Dzogchen teachings in Nepal while Nepalis ourselves have fallen behind in this regard. It is largely due to the disappearance of a thriving monastic tradition such as in Burma, Sri Lanka and Japan that monks and nuns, lamas and rinpoches have followed the path of knowledge through meditation, while ordinary householders have remained with overwhelmingly devotional practices. The Theravada Goenka Ashram in Shivapuri as well as some Mahayana and Vajrayana teachers in Boudha have, however, begun to teach ordinary people meditation, and it is believed that this will bring benefit not just to individual meditators but to the whole society as well.

  On April 15, Martin Chautari has arranged a talk and interaction program with Dzoghen teacher Tsok-nyi Rinpoche on these matters. In this program, Tsok-nyi Rinpoche will discuss, among other things, the Buddhist meditation practices of Shamatha and Vipassana, as well as the Kagyu and Nyingma practice of Dzogchen. There will be a question-and-answer interaction session after the talk.

  Tsok-nyi Rinpoche was born in 1966 in Gorkha district. He is the youngest son of the renowned Dzogchen master late Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche. In addition to receiving Drugpa Kagyu and Nyingma training, he received his education at the Tashi Jong monastery in India. In the past decade, Tsok-nyi Rinpoche has offered Dzogchen teachings in Kathmandu's Ngesdon Osel Ling Monastery and Kopan Monastery, as well as in Britain, Hong Kong and the United States. Recently he has started to organize separate meditation retreats for Nepalis.
