Major and Minor
As of Fall 2008, the Asian Studies major and minor administered by the South Asian Studies Program will not be available to any student whose projected graduation date is May 2012 or later. Students who will be graduating prior to May 2012 may complete their declared Asian Studies major or minor under the requirements given below, which remain the same as when these students declared their major or minor.
All other students who desire to major in Asian Studies must now choose among several other majors in the College, and they must choose between South Asian and East Asian emphasis. Those with an interest in South Asian Studies should declare a major in
the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies (MESAS). Those with an interest in East Asia, should declare a major either in the Department of Russian and East Asian Languages and Cultures (REALC) or the in the East Asian Studies Program.

Requirements for the Asian Studies Major and Minor (for students graduating prior to May 2012 only)
Requirements for the Major:
• 10 courses (40 credits) beyond the 100 level
Requirements for the Minor:
• 5 courses (20 credits), only one of which may be at a 100 level
• a maximum of 2 language courses (must be at the 200 level or above)
* All courses must be taken for a letter grade in order to count for the major or minor.
* Students are strongly encouraged to have a minimum of four semesters in an South Asian language.
* Courses cannot be counted twice to fulfill a major or minor other than Asian Studies.
