The Asian Studies Program at Emory College coordinates with other departments and programs at Emory to facilitate the interdisciplinary study of the geographical, historical, social, political, religious, artistic, and cultural dimensions of Asia.

Languages
Study of an Asian language is strongly encouraged for the major in Asian Studies. Emory offers four years of Japanese and Chinese, and three years of Hindi and Sanskrit. Chinese and Japanese are administered through the Department of Russian and East Asian Languages and Cultures. Hindi and Sanskrit are administered by the Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies Department.
Major and Minor in Asian Studies
Major in Asian Studies
10 courses (40 credits) beyond the 100 level including
- 1 course each in the South Asian and East Asian traditions
Minor in Asian Studies
5 courses (20 credits) including
- a maximum of 1 course at the 100 level
- a maximum of 2 language courses (must be at a level of 200 or above)
Minor in Hindi Language
4 courses (16 credits) above
- Hindi 101 and Hindi 102
- 4 additional courses from among the following:
Hindi 201, Hindi 202, Hindi 301, Hindi 302, or an approved course in Hindi Literature.
Students with previous knowledge of Hindi above the intermediate level may obtain a minor in Hindi by passing a placement test and taking three additional courses as described above.
* All courses must be taken for a letter grade in order to count for the major or minor.
* Students are strongly encouraged to have a minimum of four semesters in an Asian language by the time they complete the requirements for the major.
* Courses offered by other departments on Asian topics can be counted the major, if approved by the student's advisor.
* Courses cannot be counted twice to fulfill a major or minor other than Asian Studies.
To declare the major or minor, stop by the Asian Studies office at 1385 Oxford Rd. in the ICIS/CIPA building. We are on the first floor in room 102. You can also visit Dr. Rakesh Ranjan in S304B Callaway Center. You will be instructed to fill out a declaration form, which will then go to the Registrar.

Opportunities in Asia
Program in Mysore City, India. The study abroad program in Mysore, India focuses on the study of Indian culture and Hindi language and offers students the opportunity to pursue their individual interests through in-depth research projects or internships.
Program Information: The program is organized by a consortium of schools composed of the University of Iowa, Emory University, and Syracuse University and takes place at the Dhvanyaloka Centre for Indian Studies which is a highly respected institution established to promote the study, research, and development of Indian culture, music, dance, and the arts. Emory students will be required to attend mandatory pre-departure orientations with both CIPA and Asian Studies
Program in Dharamsala, India. The study abroad program in Dharamsala, India focuses on the study of Tibetan language, philosophy, culture, and civilization. In addition, individual research projects are an important component of the program.
Program Information: Situated in the foothills of the Himalayas and home to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Dharamsala is the cultural and intellectual capital of the Tibetan exile community. The program integrates academic study, traditional Buddhist pedagogy, field research in the Tibetan community, and guided explorations of contemplative practice. This unique combination of theory, practice, and immersion provides an excellent opportunity to explore numerous cultural, political, historical, and religious dimensions of the Tibetan world.
